Two different concepts
An EFIN and a service bureau are not interchangeable terms. An EFIN relates to electronic filing participation, while a service bureau describes a broader business model that may support multiple tax offices or professionals through software, systems, training, and operational resources.
Holding an EFIN does not by itself create the infrastructure needed to operate a service bureau.
What changes when you support other offices?
Once a business begins supporting other tax offices, the operational demands can expand. The owner may need formal onboarding, role-based permissions, training standards, support procedures, communications, technology administration, and documented expectations for participating offices.
The readiness question
The better question is not simply whether someone has an EFIN. It is whether the business has the capacity and systems to support other professionals consistently.
A tax office can be successful without becoming a service bureau. Expansion should make sense for the owner's experience, goals, infrastructure, and support capacity.
Build in stages
For some professionals, the next step may be strengthening their own office. For others, it may be building a team under an established operation. More experienced operators may be ready to evaluate service bureau infrastructure.
BRG Firm uses a stage-based approach so professionals can build from where they actually are.
